After the spree of killings on October 3, 2002, law enforcement received eyewitness reports that a white box truck with two men inside was seen speeding away from one of the crime scenes. Officers shared the information shortly after, asking that the public keep an eye out for a white box truck or van as it was of interest to the investigation. Hotlines set up to assist in the investigation were flooded with reports of people seeing white vans and law enforcement spent considerable time pulling over white vans and box trucks in the hopes of catching the snipers. Unfortunately, a white box truck or van had nothing to do with the attacks which was discovered as law enforcement began to link Muhammad and Malvo to the shooting and realized that Muhammad owned a blue 1990 Chevy Caprice.
Police dispatch calls asking officers to be on the lookout for a white box truck.
Recording of a call to the investigation's hotline to report seeing a white van with a ladder rack.
