October 2, 2002 - Michaels Craft Store
A shot is fired through a window of a Michaels craft store in Aspen Hill, Maryland at 5:30pm. The bullet narrowly missed Ann Chapman, a cashier at the store. Since no one was injured, the shot was assumed to be random, and no serious alarms were raised. Ballistics were unable to match the shot to the snipers but other evidence, a pair of sunglasses, were found at the scene.

October 2, 2002 - Shoppers Food Warehouse
Approximately one hour later, at 6:30 pm, James Martin, a 55-year-old program analyst at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is shot in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store, located in Wheaton, Maryland, about 12 miles from Aspen Hill. Officers from the district police respond immediately to the sound of gunfire and attempt to preform CPR on Martin to no avail.
