A series of shootings, initially thought to be isolated incidents but later attributed to the Beltway Snipers, take place from March to August 2002 and span several states including California, Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. In the Spring of 2006, as part of his confession, Malvo told law enforcement officials that he and Muhammad were responsible for additional shootings prior to their killing spree in the DC area. Although there is little concrete evidence linking Malvo and Muhammad to these shootings, the circumstances of each were similar to the snipers' other shootings and the details provided by Malvo were matched to shootings throughout the country.
February or March 2002
Malvo stated that he shot a man in California at close range during a robbery around this time, but the victim's identity and date of the shooting could not be determined by law enforcement.
March 19, 2002
The snipers were linked to the death of 60-year-old Jerry Taylor who was shot at a golf course in Tucson, Arizona while Malvo and Muhammad were visiting Muhammad's sister who lived nearby.
May 18, 2002
Malvo claimed to have also shot another man on a golf course in Clearwater, Florida in May of 2002. Although not linked by forensic evidence, this victim is thought to be Albert Michalczyk who was shot on May 18, 2002 and survived the attack.
May 27, 2002
Details provided by Malvo also matched the shooting death of 37-year-old Billy Gene Dillon in Denton County, Texas on May 27, 2002. Bullet fragments from the scene were inconclusive when compared to other forensic evidence from the snipers, but other crimes scene details and Malvo's confession make Billy Gene Dillon mostly likely a victim of the snipers.
August 1, 2002
Malvo's final confession was regarding the shooting of 58-year-old John Gaeta who was shot by Malvo after Malvo and Muhammad slashed his tires in Hammond, Louisiana on August 1, 2002. Gaeta pretended to be dead and after Malvo and Muhammad had stolen his wallet and left the scene, Gaeta ran to a service station and was able to receive medical attention. Malvo sent Gaeta an apology letter in 2010.
